Ivan Melnikov on the current events in Venezuela:
“I believe that the victory of Nicolas Maduro is natural. He is a promising and interesting politician, a son of the people, a longtime colleague and follower of Hugo Chavez, and the Chavez’s politics enjoys a stable and popular support in Venezuela, is admired in many countries around the globe.
I believe the claims of Mr. Capriles’s supporters have no sense. The recount would lead to the similar result: to the victory of Comrade Nicolas Maduro. The Venezuela’s electoral system is very reliable, it is credible. The fact that the gap between the results of Maduro and Capriles is not very big – only confirms that the elections were fair, with real competition and unde5r equal conditions.
As for the protests, after the tragic passing away of the great leader, Hugo Chavez, many understood that the Venezuelan opposition would exploit the situation, bestir the country during and after the elections. So that there is nothing unexpected in the so-called “saucepan riots”.
I am convinced that these sentiments are seriously stimulated by the United States. They use the technology in many countries. It is no accident that the White House spokesman Jay Curry has openly called for a recount. In our view, this is a gross interference in the internal affairs of an independent state. But the U.S. just want Venezuela to lose this independence, they will be violent and aggressive advocate for the abolishment of the election results, the change of the Chavez-Maduro course.
In my opinion, in this difficult situation, the people of Venezuela must rally around their new leader, remember under which high price country won its freedom, and the National Electoral Council should stand firm. One should in any way prevent illegal interception of power.
This view is shared by the majority of Russian citizens that are most sympathetic to Venezuela and cherish those warm relations that exist between our two countries in the last fifteen years. I recall that Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Comrade Maduro. In Russia, there is no doubt in his victory, but we are very anxious at heart because of what is happening now in Caracas and other cities”.
