The Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation with deep sorrow reports the death, on 9 January 2019, of Professor Anatoly Ivanovich Lukyanov, 88, a prominent Soviet Statesman and Party leader, candidate member of the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee in 1988-1990, the Chairman of the USSR Supreme Soviet in 1990-1991, member of the CPRF Central Committee Presidium in 1994-2000, State Duma Parliamentarian of the 1-3 convocations, Doctor of Law.
To the last breath he had been fighting for the preservation of the Soviet Country and in the ordeal stood firm in his principles and convictions.
Biography of comrade Lukyanov is a cast of the Soviet State history. He was born on May 7, 1930 in Smolensk region. His father sacrificed his life for the freedom of our Motherland in fight against Fascism. In the years of war Anatoly Ivanovich worked at the plant, contributing to our victory like thousands of Soviet children of War.
In 1948 after graduation from school with a Gold Medal, comrade Lukyanov entered the Faculty of Law in the Moscow State University and later he attended Postgraduate School. After completion of studies he became an employee of the Legal Commission of the USSR’s Council of Ministers. He worked in Hungary and Poland, and later joined the Office of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Having established himself as a brilliant specialist, he was involved in the drafting of the new Soviet Constitution, which was adopted in 1977.
In 1984 A. Lukyanov became a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Since 1986 he had been holding the highest governmental and party posts being a Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee and candidate member of the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee. In 1990 he headed the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
During the events of 1991 Yeltsin’s clique illegally arrested comrade Lukyanov and he spent more than a year in prison on absurd charges. But the prison of “Democrats” did not break his spirit. After his release, Anatoly Ivanovich took an active part in the revival of the Communist Party, became a member of the CPRF CC Presidium.
In 1993-2003, three times he was re-elected to the State Duma in his native Smolensk region and headed the Parliamentary Committee for Legislation, Judicial and Legal reform.
Since 2000 A. Lukyanov had been heading the Advisory Council to the CPRF Central Committee. His colleagues always appreciated his wisdom and integrity, deep scientific knowledge, great life and political experience.
Simultaneously, A. I. Lukyanov gave lectures at the Moscow State University, faculty of Law, acting as a Professor of the Department of Constitutional and Municipal Law. In 2012 he was awarded the title of Merited Lawyer of the Russian Federation.
Very few people know that Anatoly Ivanovich was a poet, the author of 11 books of poetry. He was a member of the Union of writers’ of Russia.
Party members mourn the passing of a reliable friend. Comrade Lukyanov left good memory and deep respect in our hearts as a person of unyielding will and faithfulness to the chosen life path. His bright and courageous image will be in mind of all who worked with him for many years and fought shoulder to shoulder for the sake of truth and justice, for a better future of our country.
