Russian Communists Share the Grief of the Cuban People

Sorrowful news has reached us. The Hero of the Cuban People, Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, is no more. The great patriot of Cuba, one of the most outstanding political leaders of the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries, died at the age of 90.

Fidel Castro is the legendary leader of the Cuban Revolution. The name of Fidel Castro is associated with truly grandiose events that shook the world in the mid-20th century. We remember the Moncada barracks, the SierraMaestroMountains and the Bay of Pigs. He was not yet 30 when he became the leader of his people fighting for their liberation. Under his leadership the Cuban patriots accomplished what seemed to be unthinkable. They did not only topple the hated dictator Batista who had turned his country into a US colony, but challenged Washington’s policy. For the first time on the American continent, within 90 miles of the coast of the main citadel of imperialism, there appeared a state that took the course for socialism.

Yes, the Cuban Revolution, the rebellious people had a great leader. Castro went down in history as a man who made an epoch, a true popular leader. His ideological staunchness, unbending will, fearlessness and absolute honesty attracted people’s hearts. His energy infected anyone who was by his side. Being the head of state, he never lost strong bonds with the people, breathing the same air with them and feeling with them. These qualities could not but earn him respect. Even his enemies recognized it.

Having raised the banner of Lenin and the Great October Revolution, Fidel remained loyal to the revolution throughout his life. It is deeply symbolic that the second part of Fidel Castro’s name, Ruz, which he inherited from his mother, is consonant with the word “Russia.” Inspired by the ideas of the October 1917 Revolution and the achievements of the Soviet State, Fidel became the leader of the main Revolution of the second half of the 20th century, a successor to the cause of Lenin, an heir to the Russian revolutionaries on the American continent.

The tiny Island of Freedom riveted the attention of the whole progressive mankind. The Cuban people set a priceless example showing that American imperialism is not all-powerful, that the fearlessness and dedication of communists could defeat it. Those great events have long become a legend.

Having taken on board the ideas of socialism, Cuba marched confidently forward. The FreedomIsland gave the world a brilliant example of building a just society that guaranteed free quality education and healthcare, a high level of science and culture. Not possessing  any significant mineral riches and caught in the vice of the American blockade, Cuba created a society in which there were no paupers or hungry people and every schoolchild had an opportunity to develop his/her talents. The achievements of the Cuban people became the dream of common people in many countries which seemed to possess greater economic potential.

The example of Cuba inspired national liberation struggles of many peoples of Asia, America and Africa. Fidel Castro and his fellow-revolutionaries came to their rescue. Cuba quickly became a moral super-power. It became a leader of the Non-Aligned Movement which included dozens of states. Cuba hosted major international fora. It became a great sporting nation which did very well at Olympic Games.

The country’s leader was more and more often referred to in the world as Fidel. His name became a symbol of revolutionary dedication, ideological and moral staunchness.

It became a symbol of valiant struggle against the world order which the advocates of capitalist globalization had been seeking to impose on the Planet for decades. During the 60 years since the Cuban Revolution they made countless attempts to “bury” Fidel. His life hung in the balance more than once. He survived many assassination attempts. But he continued to lead his people to the victory of the human spirit, Truth and Justice. He was bitterly hated by the American globalists and enjoyed boundless love of millions of people the world over. He was seen as a symbol of victorious battle for social justice and hope for getting rid of poverty and disfranchisement.

After the destruction of the USSR and the world socialist system Castro’s adversaries were sure that socialism in Cuba would not last. They hoped that the country which, owing to the exploits of Fidel and his followers, was known as the Island of Freedom, was doomed to become a mediocre puppet state controlled by transnational capital. But the Island of Freedom stood its ground. It confirmed at the most difficult of times that it deserved its proud name.

Cuba did not cave in to the pressure of severe economic sanctions and ceaseless political provocations of its enemies. It staunchly upheld the socialist gains even in the midst of an ocean of anti-communist lies and betrayal. In the direst of conditions it managed to preserve genuine sovereignty and safeguard the first socialist state in the Western Hemisphere, which was the second most heroic deed accomplished by Fidel Castro and his supporters since the 1956 Cuban Revolution.

Castro was not only an outstanding statesman, but a great thinker. Proceeding from Marxism-Leninism, he was able, amid the chaos of events, to identify key trends, quickly size up the situation and take the right decisions.

Fidel had extraordinary personal charm and at the same time exceptional modesty. All his aspirations were aimed at making happy the life of ordinary Cubans who put their trust in him. He lived up to their hopes.

The Soviet Union always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Cuba in the struggle against imperialism. Fidel Castro was a great friend of the Soviet people, a loyal and courageous ally of our country. For those who lived in the USSR and those who today value justice and independence he will forever remain a close and loved person. Today, the example of the Cuban Communists is particularly important for Russia which has experienced a capitalist comeback. Fidel’s steadfastness and adherence to principle inspire us today as we carry on his cause.

Comrade Castro has left us. Russian Communists grieve together with the Cuban people. But Fidel Castro has left behind a powerful Communist Party tested in battle and in peaceful endeavor. He left behind the Cuban people which is inspired by the brightest of ideals. He has left behind a memory in the minds and hearts of hundreds of millions of people the world over.

The Central Committee of the CPRF expresses its condolences to the people of free Cuba, to the relatives and close ones of the Comandante.

We hope that the Island of Freedom, even after his departure, will stand its ground, will remain loyal to the socialist principles and will adhere to Fidel’s heroic cause.  In the cohort of great champions of the cause of socialism the name of Fidel Castro Ruz will forever stand side by side with the names of humanity’s greatest revolutionaries.

The sun of freedom will shine over Cuba.

CPRF: Russia’s Resurgence Calls for a New Course, a New Team and a New Policy

The promises of successful development and lasting prosperity The United Russia has been giving society on the eve of elections in former years again and again turned out to be fiction. But while formerly the ‘governing party” could at least formulate a positive development program and cause many citizens to believe that these promises were real, now it is incapable of doing even that much. Society in general does not hear from the authorities anything remotely resembling a coherent electoral program.

Yet in spite of this, United Russia demonstrates confidence in an unqualified electoral victory. This despite the worsening crisis, appalling corruption, in spite of the rapid impoverishment of the people, in spite of its inability to stem these processes. What makes the authorities sure of another electoral triumph?

First of all its conviction that the citizens, while experiencing all the negative consequences of the crisis, are still not aware of its true scale and consequences. They do not see its masterminds and the direct link of what is happening with the essence of the social-economic system. A system for whose preservation they are again being urged to vote by the representatives of the “governing party” and establishment propagandists.

The popular-patriotic forces of Russia led by the CPRF are entering the State Duma elections with a coherent and constructive program that meets the interests of the absolute majority of citizens. The basis of our program is the ideology of social justice and friendship of the peoples, the principles of building a social state, concrete tough measures to combat corruption and the plundering of Russia.

Being aware of its helplessness and inability to win in a fair contest the governing party is deploying against the CPRF a dirty provocation campaign.

The appearance of ”doubles” of the CPRF candidates, the creation of spoiler parties, the issue of huge numbers of fake newspapers purporting to be published by the CPRF – this only begins the list of ”political technologies” used in the election campaign.

Pressure is being brought to bear on party activists and those who cooperate with out organizations. Cases have been registered of attacks on them, including with the use of firearms. Provocateurs are active at the meetings of our candidates with their constituencies and commit acts of hooliganism. The list of outrageous facts is growing by the day. And they fail to be properly assessed by the representatives of government bodies. All this shows that the machine of falsification is ready to do its dirty work, and this gives us serious cause for concern.

One important fact is that today, at the instigation of the United Russia, the rules of access of journalists to elections have been tightened, the number of observers has been dramatically cut and besides, the procedure of sending them to observe elections has become much more complicated. This creates conditions for all kinds of abuses.

A necessary victory

The CPRF has never given up its struggle for reviving all the best features of the Soviet system,  and for the study and introduction of all the advanced world practices.

We insisted and continue to insist on bringing back under state control the strategic sectors of the economy which today are used by the oligarchy to enrich itself. Enrichment at the expense of vital interests of the country and the people. This is the only way to stop “offshorization” and plundering of Russia.

We insisted and continue to insist not only on a bigger role of the state, but on increasing its responsibility to its people.

We demanded and will demand the restoration of the rights of the working man which have been trampled underfoot. We will insist on the restoration of industry and agriculture, support of people’s and collective enterprises, higher living standards, abolition of crippling charges for capital repair of housing and new land taxes.

We have fought and will continue to fight for a cardinal change of policy in financing healthcare, science and culture. Quality medical care and quality education must again become totally free and accessible to everyone.

All the proposals of the CPRF have been set forth in our program “Ten Steps Towards a Decent Life.” But for these demands to be implemented, there needs to be a change of the socio-economic course. It can only be legislatively ensured if the elections are won by the state-patriotic forces, only if the parliamentary majority belongs to the supporters of a policy that meets the interests of the people. Only then will it be possible to prevent the implementation of the government’s destructive plans connected with the new draft state budget, with the final refusal of the authorities to meet their social obligations to society.

If Russia is to survive and recover a new course, a new team and a new policy are needed.

A defeat may turn out to be irreversible. That is why the price of the coming elections is very high. As we go to the polls on 18 September every citizen will answer the main question: in what country will we, our children and grandchildren live? It is simply a crime to be silent and do nothing. That was how 25 years ago, in 1991, we spinelessly and irresponsibly gave our common Motherland away to be torn to pieces. None of us has the right to repeat that tragic mistake.

WE DEMAND RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN UKRAINE. FREE ALLA ALEXANDROVSKAYA! Statement by the Presidium of the CC CPRF

Ukraine continues to perform acts of legal arbitrariness and political blackmail  in Ukraine. The latest victim of outrageous pressure is Alla Alexandrovskaya, a champion of the interests of the country’s disadvantaged citizens, member of four parliaments, Honoured Citizen of the City of Kharkov, First Secretary of the Kharkov Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine.  The Ukrainian Security Service unlawfully arrested her on specious charges of “encroaching on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine.” On June 30 the Kievsky District Court of Kharkov, using trumped-up charges  ordered Alla Alexandrovskaya to be put under guard for two months.

What is happening in Kharkov fits in neatly with the so-called “decommunization” propaganda campaign. Alla Alexandrovskaya has long been the target of a baiting campaign in the Ukrainian media. National-Radicals have leveled  groundless charges against her, threatened her, and staged provocations not stopping short of attacking and beating her. All these Bandera-style actions grossly violate the country’s Constitution, but the authorities have done nothing to interdict these acts. The reason is that the ruling regime in Ukraine itself instigates and follows the practice of cracking down on dissent and persecuting communists.

This time around the victim of the policy emanating from the high offices in Kiev is a 68-year-old woman who has serious health problems. Already under arrest Alla Alexandrovskaya suffered a hypertension crisis. Nevertheless she is still in pre-trial detention. The falsehood of the case is becoming ever more evident and the situation ever more intolerable.

We demand from the Ukrainian authorities to immediately release Alla Alexandrovskaya from the Ukrainian Security Service incarceration.

We call on the world public opinion to support the courageous woman and rise to protect her against political persecution. We appeal to the international democratic and human rights organizations to demand from the Ukrainian authorities an immediate release of Alla Alexandrovskaya, strict adherence to the principle of supremacy of law, protection of democratic rights and freedoms of citizens. We hope that the UN Human Rights Council, the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch will take a principled stand on this issue. We count on the solidarity of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, the Women’s International Democratic Federation and other groups.

FREEDOM FOR ALLA ALEXANDROVSKAYA!
